The Great Pyramids of Cairo

The Great Pyramids of Cairo

Our Cairo frames were designed with shapes and precision in mind. From the block color combination to its defined edges and angles, they bring to mind the thought that goes into design, architecture, and engineering. As unique as they come, the Cairo frames still bring forth a beautiful balance of black birch and kevazingo wood, a perfect combination for these rectangle eyeglasses. It reminds us of the influences that inspire the field of science, technology, engineering, and mathematics (STEM) as  we know it today.

What better way to name these crafty frames than after the home of the pyramids: The Greater Cairo in Egypt. Today it is recognized as the largest metropolitan area in its region and one of the largest around the world. It is a beautiful reminder of the Pyramids of Giza, Khafre, and Menkaure, all which encompass the rich history and culture of that city and that of Egypt.

The Building Blocks

Pyramids were built during a time when Egypt was considered one of the most progressive and powerful civilizations in the world. They served as a sacred tomb for Pharaohs and their queens who were considered royal and divine during that time. Given the strong belief of the afterlife, pyramids served a means by which the spirit of Egyptian royal rulers could be lifted toward the Gods. Once an Egyptian King passed away, their divinity and body had to have been preserved to prepare them for their transition into that afterlife.

The big question lies, how were these pyramids possibly built? Of course the best engineers and architects were called on to design and bring to fruition these immaculate and great structures. They were built with quarried stone blocks including limestone, granite, basalt, gypsum (mortar), and baked mud bricks. Some archaeologists suggest that a 4,000-year-old ramp system was used to haul multiple stone blocks along the pyramids to set them into place. Additionally, tomb art and inscriptions were found that spoke to the divine leaders and the rich culture of people who lived in Ancient Egypt during that time. While many questions remain in how the pyramids were built as well as how they have been preserved for so many years, there is no question that these works of architecture, set as an example for how STEM is carried out today.
